Saftey House Program
A
Safety House volunteer must complete an application and submit to a
background check and interview by an officer or officers of the Lyndhurst
Police Dept. They must also commit to having a responsible person at
their home or business during the hours that Lyndhurst school children
are traveling to and from school. After completing the requirements,
the Safety House participant will receive a placard to display in a
front window, identifying that location as a recognized ‘Safety
House’.
Safety House participants must agree to provide assistance to children
by:
a. Telephoning the Lyndhurst Police Dept. for help.
b. Reassuring children who are lost, frightened, or in danger.
c. Assist children with a medical emergency by calling emergency response
personnel.
d. Assist children who are victims of intimidation or abuse.
e. Reporting every incident to the Lyndhurst Police Dept.
Safety House participants are not required to:
a. Provide transportation.
b. Provide medical treatment.
c. Provide personal necessities like toilet facilities or food.
d. Enforce laws.
The role of the Lyndhurst Police Dept. is to assist by responding to
any call received by a Safety House participant and to generate a case
number for each incident. All proper reports are to be submitted based
on the call type and the child’s parents and school principal
are to be notified about the incident that occurred requiring their
child to seek assistance from a Safety House.
In our efforts on becoming a Distinctive Police Department, one that
stands out above the rest and serves the community in which we live
and work to the best of our ability, this Safety House program will
prove to be a great addition to the already large list of services we
provide to the people of our township.
